Study with friends online without paying, and without an account

Most “study with friends” products hide the actual desk behind a signup wall, a paid tier, or a matching queue. StudyBuddy’s room is free to use. Guests can create or join, run a timer, talk in chat, and share tasks. You only sign in if you want the time saved against your name: streaks, personal stats, friends list, and the weekly leaderboard.

What “free” means here

There is no paid checkout on StudyBuddy today. Rooms, timers, chat, tasks, themes, and ambient sounds are available without a card. A room holds up to ten people. A signed-in host can keep a handful of rooms alive between sessions so the same code still works after a break. Guest rooms go idle and close after about six hours, which is the right lifetime for a one-off cram night that should not linger on a public code.

Free also means you can refuse the account. A guest name lives in this browser’s local storage. Clearing site data forgets it. It is not a profile, and it cannot appear on a leaderboard — because a leaderboard without identity is just a list of nicknames anyone can type. That split is deliberate: the room is for everyone; the scoreboard is for people who proved an email.

How friends actually get in

Send the six-character code. They type it on the home page. No app store, no calendar invite, no “request to join” that sits unseen until the host opens a notification. Signed-in users can also add each other as friends and send a room invite inside the app; those invites last a day, and if the room was closed in the meantime the join fails cleanly instead of hanging.

This is not a way to meet strangers. There is no public lobby of rooms to browse. If you want a random body-double, other sites exist. StudyBuddy assumes the group already has a chat: class WhatsApp, dorm Discord, family group. The code is a door, not a discovery engine.

What you give up if you stay a guest

Guest study time is not written to a profile. Close the tab and the session is gone from any long-term chart. You also skip friend requests, global rankings, and the weekly recap email. None of that blocks the room. If the group only needed a shared desk for tonight’s problem set, stay a guest. If you want to see a week of minutes later, create the account after the session — the room tools you already used do not change.
